Acne Skin Care Products

When it comes to acne skin care products there certainly no shortages. What is most important when looking at acne treatments is the active ingredients and the type of product you are using. For example, you would want to stay away from products which make the skin produce excess oil. You wouldn't want to use heavy moisturizers or other acne skin care products that may clog pores. This will only add to the problem.

To treat acne, substances that address the root cause, excess sebum and the resulting bacteria on the skin, are what you should be focusing on. Anyone looking to get rid of acne should include a cleanser, toner and an acne skin cream or lotion.

Acne Treatment Cleansers

When selecting a cleanser for treating acne, look for the term "non-comedogenic" (or non-occlusive). Acne skin care products that are non-comedogenic do not not block pores which can increase the amount of oil (sebum) that is produced by the skin. This in turn leads to bacteria build up and eventually acne breakouts. Cleansers that contain salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are also effective in treating the underlying cause of acne. When using cleansers be sure to only use them a maximum twice a day to avoid dry skin and stripping the skin of it's natural pH balance.

Toner for Acne Skincare

Toners or astringents are acne skin care products which add a level of deep cleaning after using a skin cleanser. Toners can remove dead skin cells, pollutants and other debris such as make up that cleansers may miss. These products often contain strong antiseptic and antibacterial properties that abosorb excess surface oil and treat acne by hydrating and clarifying the skin.

You want to be sure that any toner or acne skin care products that you use do not contain alcohol (especially isopropyl) since they can cause excessive drying of acne skin. Algae extract, menthol and both vitamin E and vitamin C are additional ingredients that can help purify the skin and provide effective acne treatment.

Acne Skin Creams and Lotions

The common ingredient in most over the counter acne skin creams in benzoyl peroxide. This compound breaks down once it comes into contact with the skin and produces benzoic acid and oxygen which helps to break down dead cells and bacteria on the skin. This in turn unclogs the sebaceous glands which produce the oily substance sebum that is responsible for most acne.

Tea Tree Oil has also shown to be an effective alternative to benzoyl peroxide and can be found in some acne skin care products and is a potent antiseptic.

If common acne products aren't having an impact on your condition, advanced care such as acne laser treatments may be an option to discuss with your dermatologist.
