Facial Masks
A facial mask consists of a clay or cream treatment that is applied directly to the face, allowed to dry and then removed by either peeling or with water. These facial masks often contain nutrients, vitamins, minerals and other plant extracts (such as those from fruit). Many different commercially made facial masks are available as are many recipes for homemade facial masks using natural ingredients. Many have reported the best results using a facial mask just after using their favorite facial cleanser.
The formulas used in facial treatments such as a face mask are usually targeted towards skin type. The ingredients in a facial mask for dry skin is likely to contain heavy moisturizers which would not be appropriate for oily skin and may actually make the skin more oily. Below are some common varieties you are likely to find in a skin care mask.
Clay (Mud) Masks - These are perhaps the most common type of facial mask associated with facial skin care. They come in a wide range of colors with Green, Red, Yellow, Pink, White or Gray. The best of these skin care masks are made from clay that originates in the Middle East, namely Morocco (Rhassoul Clay), France and the Dead Sea. Because these clays contain high levels of minerals and nutrients, they act as a "magnet" to draw out toxins and unclog pores leaving the skin clear and rejuvenated.
Hydrating Facial Mask - these masks are directed towards those with dry skin or have skin that is frequently exposed to low humidity and cold climates. Facial care with a hydrating mask normally include moisturizers and emollients that help to trap moisture in the skin replenishing dried skin cells. These masks also work to restore pH balance to the skin which assists in maintaining the skin's natural moisture barrier.
Collagen Face Mask - these types of facial mask are formulated for aging skin and attempt to reduce the signs of aging such as fine wrinkles and restore elasticity to the skin which projects a more vibrant and youthful appearance. This type of facial mask typically contains ingredients such as Collagen, Vitamins A,C and E, Jojoba, Aloe Vera and Hyaluronic Acid. As with any facial skin care mask, these should not be used on problem skin without consulting a dermatologist.
Enzyme Facial Mask - the goal of enzyme masks is to help exfoliate facial skin by loosening and dissolving dead surface cells and removing dirt and debris that may clog pores. Papaya and Grapefruit extracts can often be found in this type of mask along with Papain enzyme. Frequent use of an enzyme mask can keep the kin clear of breakouts.
Firming Mask - these masks are used to gently firm and tighten the skin and are often used as part of a firming body treatment regimen. This facial mask usually contains Magnesium, Aloe Vera, Kaolin Clay and other natural ingredients. The substances can help decongest pores, remove impurities, circulation and elasticity - all of which can revitalize and tone the skin.
Homemade Facial Mask - These home facials are usually made with all natural ingredients such as fruit, grains and dairy products. Popular homemade masks include the Avocado Facial Mask which works to soften skin, Banana Facial Masks which rely on the acids found in bananas to naturally exfoliate the skin. Grapefruit can be added to other substances (such as sour cream and eggs) to create an effective facial mask for oily skin. Milk of Magnesia and yogurt are also commonly used in homemade facial masks and used before applying night cream.
