Mineral Makeup

Mineral makeup and mineral cosmetics are made from finely ground minerals and have become increasing popular in the skin care market. Mineral blush, mineral foundation, mineral lip care and mineral eye shadow are the products most associated with mineral make-up products. Some of this success has been due to the "natural" ingredients and their ability to feel lighter on the skin than traditional cosmetics.

Mineral makeup products are also what are known as non-comedogenic which means they will not clog pores and encourage acne or other skin conditions. Natural mineral makeup also do not contain perfumes, alcohol, dyes or preservatives which can irritate sensitive skin and are the root cause of most make up related skin problems.

As is the case with many skin care products, mineral make up has both it's fans and detractors. Those who swear by it are usually quick to mention that it is easier and lighter on the skin (even if it is worn to bed). Those who have not had a positive experience usually complain of overly dry skin and not very forgiving when it comes to showing signs of age such as wrinkles and laugh lines.

The minerals most associated with pure mineral cosmetics are zinc oxide, titanium oxide and mica. Both zinc and titanium have been shown to provide protection from the sun and some mineral makeup products are even rated with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or higher.

Because prolonged sun exposure over time is the number one cause of aging skin, natural mineral cosmetics may contain this added benefit in keeping the skin young looking and free from damage or discoloration.

When choosing mineral make-up it is important to read the label and look for synthetic ingredients such as parabens (pretty much anything ending in a "yl"). Mineral powder makeup and cosmetics are frequently marketed as natural products and there are no strict guidelines as to what constitutes a "true" mineral makeup. As a result, all products are not created equal even if they claim to be natural mineral cosmetics.

One of the additional benefits that is cited when it comes to mineral make up is the fact that it stays in tact on the skin for long periods of time and maintains a high level of "glow" on the skin. A word of caution here - some of these effects can be the result of grinding the minerals to the point where they are microscopic in nature. These mineral elements can take on properties which can actually be dangerous and aggravate (or instigate) skin condition such as cystic acne.

Other Benefits of Mineral Makeup

-Doesn't feel like you're wearing make up. Using some traditional foundations, cream blush, or eye makeup can feel "heavy" on the skin. Mineral make-up has a lighter texture and allows your skin to breathe better.

-Like organic essential oils, it doesn't clog pores and is a good solution for sensitive skin. Traditional makeup use can lead to undesirable conditions such as acne, dryness and oily skin. Pure mineral cosmetics do not contain many of the synthetic materials of commercially made products so they tend to be better tolerated by the skin and reduce irritation.

-Can contain ingredients that are beneficial to the skin which aid in rejuvenating the skin such as magnesium, aluminum and gold and can provide that "salon beauty" look without having to go in for expensive treatments.

-Can be used immediately following more advanced skin care procedures such as peels and laser treatment. Mineral makeup can act to sooth skin which has been made raw from chemical or laser treatments. They can also provide an added layer of sun protection which is crucial after such procedures.
