Skin Types

It has long been standard practice for people to believe that their skin fits neatly into one of the five main categories of skin types: Dry Skin, Oily Skin, Sensitive Skin, Combination Skin or Aging Skin. In reality most of us have skin that shows a wide ranging combination of traits from each category. Dry skin sufferers may exhibit sensitivity and aging skin may appear oily in different areas. Of the five, perhaps Combination skin comes closest to describing most skin types.

When considering a skin care regimen it is best to start by first determining what your skin type actually is. Certain products may not work well on some types of skin and some may actually make matters worse or cause irritation.

For example, someone with oily skin should probably not use a heavy moisturizer since one cause of oily skin is clogged pores and these moisturizers can clog them even further. Those with dry skin may actually benefit from this same approach.

Most skin care and body care products today are developed with a certain skin type in mind. Those with enlarged pores, adult acne, uneven skin tone, couperose skin and other characteristics can usually find a product formulation for their different skin types. This being said, it is still important to also understand what active ingredients are going to be effective for your situation.

General Product Guidelines For Each of the Skin Types

Dry Skin - Cream Cleansers, Thick Moisturizers, Natural Soaps (with essential oils), Hydrating Gel

Oily Skin - Clay Facial Masks, Skin Toner (with alpha hydroxy acid), Lightweight Moisturizer (jojoba oil),

Sensitive Skin - All Natural Products (no harsh chemicals), Aloe Gel Moisturizers, Cleansing Milk or Gel Based Cleansers and Masks

Combination Skin - Mild Cleansers (water based), Silicone Oil Moisturizers, Gentle Toners (with lavender essential oil to restore pH balance)

Aging Skin - Products with Alpha Hydroxy Acid, Products with Retin-A (wrinkle treatment cream), Products with Sunscreen

If you are unsure which of the skin types you have or feel that the issues with your skin are more complex, a skin analysis can be performed by a skin care professional (aesthetician) or a dermatologist. This analysis can help them to determine which skin care, beauty and makeup products are most suitable.

If you have mature skin, other aging skin treatment options can be discussed such as those to remove wrinkles and skin discoloration.
