Oily Skin Care
Oily skin is characterized by a enlarged pores and a slick, shiny complexion that results from overactive sebaceous glands in the skin. These produce a substance known as sebum which is associated with hair follicles. This condition is most predominantly seen on the face in an area known as the "T-zone" which covers the area of the forehead and then down the center of the face to the chin. The cheeks, neck, chest, shoulders and back are often places where oily-skin conditions appear.
The most common conditions experienced by those with oily skin are blemishes such as pimples and acne that result from clogged pores and shiny complexion. Hormonal imbalances, diet and certain skin care products can all have an impact on the degree of oiliness in the skin.
One "benefit" of an oily skinned complexion is that this skin type does not tend to develop skin wrinkles and other signs of skin aging as quickly as dry or even normal skin. Oily skin is generally better hydrated than other skin types. Oily complexion usually occurs around puberty and through early adulthood but can be experienced in mature skin as well.
Care for Oily Skin
Cleanser for Oily Skin
It is natural to think that using products designed to dry out the skin would be an effective way to treat this skin type. However, this can actually aggravate the problem. When selecting a cleanser to treat an oily complexion, using a water based gel is preferable. Those containing clay or milk are also good choices. These skin products will help to preserve the pH balance in your skin, the goal being to remove excess oil from your skin but avoid removing the protective layer that can dry it out. It is important to choose a mild cleanser and not to use facial cleanser for oily skin more than once or twice a day.
Oily Skin Moisturizer
Most oily skin does not usually require a moisturizer to keep the skin soft and hydrated. The natural processes that are taking place in this skin type are usually sufficient. If you do decide to add this to your skin care regimen, a lightweight moisturizer is preferred. Aloe based products or hydrosol are good choices here. Too much or moisturizer that is too heavy can further increase the chances of clogging pores. This can lead to acne and blemished skin.
Skin Toner
Oily skin care can include toners or astringents. Toners can help to remove excess dirt, makeup and leftover cleanser that can clog the pores but it is important not to used ones containing harsh ingredients such as isopropyl or rubbing alcohol. If clearing excess oil is needed multiple times a day (especially on the shoulders, chest and back), using an herbal based product such as those with tea extracts or lemon essential oil and tea tree essential oil can be effective without making the problem worse.
Oily Skin Facial
Clay masks and exfoliating scrubs can help reduce the occurrence of blackheads, breakouts and the appearance of enlarged pores. Skincare masks draw out oil, pollutants and toxins from the skin and provide nourishment through high mineral content.
These facial treatments can be made more effective by adding oils such as rosemary essential oil as well as essential oils from tea or thyme which can help to heal skin blemishes.
Using facial scrubs with alpha or beta hydroxy acids on a limited basis each week can help to refine the skin and exfoliate dead skin cells which can clog pores and increase the presence of oily skin.
Cosmetics and Oily Skin
Heavy makeup and the chemicals found in them can hamper the skin's ability to allow in oxygen and can also clog pores. When choosing make up products, it is wise to use only light foundation or cosmetics made with natural ingredients.
Mineral makeup tends to be lighter on the skin and include finely ground minerals which can maintain pH and nourish the skin. Avoiding makeup altogether for oily skin is probably your best bet but since this is not an option for most people, look for those that are designed specifically for oily skin types and contain a mineral base which are also more gentle on sensitive skin.
